These camera-equipped earbuds offer a wild glimpse into the future of AirPods

Wireless earbuds have already become the default wearable for many people. That’s why this new research seems more interesting than another smart glasses demo. Researchers at the University of Washington have developed VueBuds, a prototype system that equips commercially available wireless earbuds with tiny cameras so users can ask an AI model about what’s in front of them.

How does this work?

In the example used by the university, someone can look at a Korean food label, ask for a translation, and then hear the response through the earbuds. VueBuds captures low-resolution black and white still images and sends them to a nearby phone or device via Bluetooth. A small, locally running AI model then answers questions in about a second. This local processing is a big part of the project’s appeal, as the team is clearly trying to avoid some of the privacy issues that come with smart glasses and always-on cloud vision systems.

The earbuds feature a recording light so users can delete images instantly and continue processing on the device. The hardware compromises make the whole thing believable. The cameras are about the size of a grain of rice, and the team says they chose low-power, low-resolution grayscale images because full-resolution videos would drain the battery too quickly and exceed Bluetooth’s realistic capabilities.

The researchers also found that angling each camera 5 to 10 degrees outward gave a usable field of view of 98 to 108 degrees, while merging the two earbud images into one helped reduce response time to about one second instead of two.

Why this feels like a look at future AirPods

Lead author Shyam Gollakota said the team wanted to explore visual intelligence in earbuds, in part because smart glasses and VR headsets have not gained widespread mainstream adoption and because there are often greater privacy concerns with these products. And there are rumors that Apple is working on AirPods with built-in cameras

This idea also fits well with the recent rumors about AirPods. Apple is reportedly exploring future AirPods with tiny infrared cameras or sensors that could improve spatial awareness and unlock new AI-powered features without dramatically changing the earbuds’ appearance or cost. That doesn’t mean that VueBuds is secretly a preview of Apple’s exact roadmap. But it makes the larger concept seem a lot less far-fetched.
