Zoom video calls just got a new, awkward little feature. The platform will now ask you if you are human. The company has partnered with World, Sam Altman’s iris scanning identity company (formerly known as Worldcoin), to provide real-time human verification in meetings.
Launched on April 17, 2026, the feature is part of the rollout of World ID 4.0. This allows hosts to confirm that every face in the call belongs to a real person and not an AI-generated impostor.
How does the “Verified Human” badge actually work?
For those wondering how World’s Deep Face technology works, it involves a three-step process. It compares a signed image from a user’s original Orb registration, a live facial scan from the device, and the frame of the video visible to the other participants in the meeting.
Only if the three samples match will a “Verified Human” badge appear next to the user’s name. It seems strange and ironic to me that I would have to prove that I am human just to be seen as such in a Zoom meeting.
Hosts can also require deep face verification to join meetings, preventing unverified participants from fully joining. On-site checks during the call are also possible. Whether you think your colleague looks a little weird or you just want to annoy someone, you can request a real-time review.
Why is this even necessary?
Quite simply, deepfake fraud is no longer something you hear about from friends of a friend or read about on weekend blogs. In early 2024, engineering firm Arup lost $25 million after an employee in Hong Kong authorized transfers during a video call that turned out to be a deepfake for everyone except the victim.
Something similar happened in 2025 with a multinational company in Singapore. Additionally, financial losses from deepfake-powered fraud exceeded $200 million in the first quarter of last year alone. The threat is no longer hypothetical; It is something that more and more people and companies are facing.
The direction is clear: biometric proof of personality is becoming the norm in the workplace every day.
