Roblox increases child safety with new account types that restrict chat and game access

Roblox is among the busiest digital playgrounds on the Internet, but security, especially for its youngest users, has been a constant challenge.

Well, on April 13, 2026, the platform’s founder and CEO David Baszucki announced two new age-based account tiers that will launch in June.

So what exactly is changing for young players?

The platform launches Roblox Kids for users between the ages of five and eight and Roblox Select for users between the ages of nine and 15.

Both categories are automatically assigned via the platform’s existing facial age verification mechanism, which became mandatory in January 2026 to access the built-in chat feature.

For the youngest group, Roblox Kids, chat is completely disabled by default. Game access is also limited to content that only has a minimum or lenient age rating. Select users get more freedom with medium-rated games and chats, which can be activated gradually depending on their age.

Once a user turns 16, they switch to a standard account.

What does this mean for parents and developers?

Parents will have tighter controls, including the ability to individually block or approve titles up to age 15. Meanwhile, developers face tighter access controls. To reach a younger audience, they must provide ID verifications, two-step authentication, and an active Roblox Plus subscription (which costs $4.99 per month).

As mentioned at the beginning, the new age-based accounts will be rolled out worldwide in early June 2026. Users are also given a grace period to verify their age.

If you’re wondering where the sudden policy shift is coming from, it’s due to lawsuits filed by the attorneys general of Louisiana and Texas over child safety concerns.

It’s one reason platforms can no longer put children’s safety on the backburner, and if the platform does well, it could set a benchmark for age-appropriate access.
