The numbers are getting wilder in the world of gaming monitors, and the latest TCL CSOT leak is a classic example.
According to Visuntang, a channel information platform (via IT Home’s April 13, 2026 report), the Chinese display maker is working on a gaming monitor that can switch between 160 Hz at a higher resolution and 640 Hz at a relatively lower resolution.
Why is a 4x refresh rate increase such a big deal?
That’s a 4x multiplier and a significant jump. Most dual-mode monitors on the market limit the increase in frame rate at low resolution and high frame rate to only twice the high resolution.
For example, a monitor running at 160Hz would typically peak at 320Hz when reduced to 1080p. However, unlike traditional dual-mode monitors, the upcoming model of the TCL CSOT could deliver a much more dramatic leap.
HKC also has a similar 4x concept with 4K at 200Hz and FHD at 800Hz. Asus also has comparable offerings with 3x and 4x refresh rate switching. TCL’s 640Hz gaming monitor could launch in the third quarter of the year, but pricing and other details remain under wraps.
What does this mean for everyday gamers?
For gamers, especially competitive gamers, higher refresh rates directly translate to smoother movements, faster response times and less motion blur. It’s worth mentioning here that producing 640 frames per second would require quite a bit of GPU power.
There are currently some ultra-fast refresh rate monitors available in the US. These include the Asus ROG Swift OLED (720 Hz at 720p) for $1,099 and the BenQ Zowie XL2586X+ (600 Hz at 1080p) for $999.99. Then there’s the HKC ANTGAMER ANT275PQ MAX, which offers a 1080Hz refresh rate at 720p resolution.
It’s clear that the refresh rate battle between gaming monitor manufacturers isn’t going away any time soon. What makes TCL CSOT’s 640Hz panel so special is its 4x multiplier approach. If the company launches the monitor at a competitive price, it could pressure Asus, BenQ and MSI to significantly increase their offerings.
