Google’s new Android backup idea is so convenient that I’m annoyed it took so long

Not having enough storage space is one of those problems that almost everyone understands and hardly anyone deals with properly. Storage space can almost never be enough, so some people continue to pay for cloud storage. Meanwhile, others keep promising that they would “sort it out later.” And many people just end up deleting things when the warning becomes too annoying.

But Google’s upcoming Android feature could finally offer a better answer, with automatic local backup on a PC. This works wirelessly like a cloud storage service, but it’s also free since you’re using your own device.

Android Authority’s recent takedown of Google Play Services Beta v26.15.31 revealed that Google is working on an automatic backup feature in Quick Share that will allow selected files to be copied from your phone to your PC without using the cloud.

Why this might be the storage fix that regular people actually use

Cloud backup is certainly useful, but many people still don’t want to pay for it. Given the small amount of free storage you get, things like WhatsApp backups and a year’s worth of photos and videos can easily take up that free storage space right away.

But Google’s in-development feature appears to allow users to automatically back up camera photos, camera videos and audio files directly to a home PC, thanks to a new automatic sync option and a “Backup Now” button for manual transfers.

The report also revealed that deleting a file from your phone does not result in its copy being removed from the PC backup. So the feature isn’t just about syncing, it’s about finally giving people the ability to free up storage without feeling like they’re throwing away memories.

Your Android, your computer, your storage

The part that really matters is the slogan “free”. Most households already have a laptop, a desktop, or even both. And often hundreds of gigabytes of storage are largely unused. Unless there’s someone in the house playing, editing high-resolution games, or hoarding huge files, there’s usually plenty of space for old phone recordings, family photos, and voice memos.

So Google’s feature seems to be taking advantage of this reality rather than pushing people to buy more cloud storage space. Since it’s in Quick Share, it will likely use the same local transfer system, which also suggests you don’t need an internet connection for backup. You just need to be in close proximity. From start to finish, your data stays with you.

This is the boring feature that Android needs

However, there is still a catch. The details come from an APK teardown, so Google hasn’t officially rolled out the feature yet and it could change before release. But if it does come to that, it’s improving the quality of life that might be more important than a lot of pretentious AI nonsense. It’s convenient, wireless and free.
