With X you can finally stop Grok AI from altering your photos, but the solution isn’t enough

X has added a new option that appears to allow users to block Grok from editing photos they share on the platform. The control introduced in the X app is called “Block Edits by Grok” and is intended to give users more control over unwanted edits to their images.

The feature was first reported by Social Media Today and reviewed by Daily Sparkz. On the surface, it looks like a privacy-friendly move to prevent unwanted AI changes. However, tests by The Verge have found that the protection is more limited than the name suggests.

Why the Grok modification block function is inadequate

You can find the setting in the image editing tools when uploading a photo. You can tap on the brush icon and open additional options where the switch will appear as shown in the image.

Once activated, the feature is intended to prevent Grok from changing the image. However, it only blocks one specific way Grok can interact with an image.

When enabled, other users will not be able to tag @Grok in replies to the photo and ask the AI to edit it. However, the protection stops there.

The small text in the setting indicates that the switch only prevents Grok from changing the content through direct tagging. It doesn’t stop the chatbot from editing the image if someone uses a different method.

For example, anyone can still download a photo or take a screenshot and upload it again. Once the image is as a new post or file, Grok can be asked to modify it without restrictions.

While the switch closes one avenue for editing your photo, there are many other doors open to AI manipulation. So the protection isn’t as solid as it sounds.

Recently, X put Grok’s image editing tools behind a paywall after backlash over non-consensual sexualized images.

Now this edit block switch has been introduced, but simple switches like this do little to stop AI edits once images are shared online.
