Toyota didn’t rule out bringing that with me Tacoma to Australia in the future, with the North American pickup possibly sitting between the HiLux and Tundra in the brand’s lineup.
In conversation with Daily Sparkz Speaking at the launch of the new HiLux, Sean Hanley, vice president of sales and marketing at Toyota Australia, said the brand was constantly looking at models overseas to find out what local buyers might like.
“We are a global company, so there is more than one way for us to bring products to market,” Mr Hanley said.
“The great thing is, we can look around the globe, including the United States. We can look there – Europe, wherever, Africa, you know, all these different places – and say, Oh, that looks like a good deal. Maybe we could bring that here.”

For several years, unconfirmed reports suggested that the existing HiLux would be replaced by an all-new model based on the same TNGA platform as the Tacoma.
However, Toyota instead decided to release a new HiLux based on the previous version with new styling, new interior and improvements to suspension and technology.
Mr Hanley confirmed that the Tacoma would not replace the HiLux in the foreseeable future and revealed that the company is considering adding vehicles from global markets to its own portfolio.
“What I’m saying is there are all these other great and exciting options that we can explore.”
While Mr Hanley didn’t directly mention the Tacoma by name, Toyota Australia’s senior executive has been on record in the past to express his love for the pickup, which is currently produced exclusively in left-hand drive, and has publicly admitted that the vehicle has been on the company’s radar for a long time.
The current Tacoma will be launched in 2023 and is powered by a 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine that produces 170 kW and 329 Nm in the base model, up to 207 kW and 430 Nm in higher trim levels.
A hybrid version is also available with 243kW and 630Nm thanks to a 36kW electric motor powered by a 1.87kWh battery.
Meanwhile, the latest Toyota HiLux’s smaller petrol and diesel engines have been dropped from the range, and the 2.8-litre turbodiesel four-cylinder engine is now fitted across the range.
