Data glasses have already been criticized because of data protection concerns. But now a new problem is brewing. Cheat. And it’s surprisingly easy.
A recent report from Rest of the world highlights how AI-powered smart glasses are used to scan exam questions and display answers directly on the lens, essentially turning them into a real-time cheating tool. In some cases, students even rent these glasses for as little as $6 per day and use them not just for navigation or translation, but specifically to gain an unfair advantage on exams.
How does that even work?
It’s a mix of hardware and AI catching up. Modern smart glasses are equipped with cameras, microphones and AI assistants that can analyze what you are seeing and respond to it in real time. This means that a question can be scanned on paper, processed by an AI model and returned as an answer. And all without taking out a phone. And because these devices look like regular glasses, they are much harder to detect compared to traditional fraud methods.
Adding fuel to the fire, devices like the Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses have already raised concerns about covert recording and privacy. Critics point out how easy it is to take photos or videos without others noticing. Now that fraud comes into play, it’s not just about being watched, but also about fairness, trust and how institutions even enforce rules.
When smart gets… a little too smart
This goes far beyond just exam cheating; it challenges the entire system. Experts warn that devices such as AI-powered smart glasses could disrupt traditional methods of detecting wrongdoing because they are inconspicuous, always on and difficult to track. Some regions have already started taking drastic measures, such as temporarily disabling AI tools during exams, just to stay on top.
At the same time, we are entering an era of “invisible technology” where these devices are genuinely useful but also easy to misuse. And that’s the real dilemma: When technology becomes so seamless, the line between helping and cheating begins to disappear.
