Notta introduces bot-free meeting recording for Mac and Windows

Notta’s new Bot Free mode redefines the way professionals record and transcribe meetings – no interruptions, no waiting, and no awkward “who invited this?” moments.

If you’ve ever used an AI meeting assistant, you know exactly how to do this. You’re in the middle of a conversation, the discussion finally gets going and then a bot joins the call. Everything stops. Someone asks if a recorder is invited. The river stops. While this visible presence is functional, it often disrupts the very meetings these tools are designed to support.

With its latest update, Notta offers desktop users a different approach. Bot-Free mode eliminates the need for a virtual participant, allowing meetings to run uninterrupted.

No presence, maximum focus

Most AI transcription tools rely on bots that join meetings as participants. This method ensures compatibility across platforms, including browsers and mobile apps, but comes with trade-offs. Bots take time to join, grant permissions, and confirm participants. During sensitive or risky conversations, even a small disruption can affect engagement.

Bot Free mode takes a fundamentally different approach. Instead of joining the meeting, Notta Desktop captures audio directly from the operating system. It records both microphone input and system audio simultaneously using native APIs built into macOS and Windows.

The result is immediately visible. Recording begins the moment you click, with no presence visible in the meeting. There is no additional participant, no delay and no shift of attention. The conversation stays where it belongs – with the people in the room.

How it works behind the scenes

On macOS 14.4 and later, Notta uses Apple’s ProcessTap API to access system audio streams without requiring screen recording permissions. In previous macOS versions, it is based on ScreenCaptureKit. For Windows systems (Windows 10 and later, x64 architecture), WASAPI Loopback is used, a native solution that captures system audio without additional permissions.

An important technical detail is the two-channel audio design. The user’s microphone input is captured on one channel, while system audio – voices from the meeting – plays on another channel. This separation allows for more accurate speaker identification and helps the transcription engine distinguish between the user and other participants.

Before the audio is processed, it goes through WebRTC’s audio stack, which includes echo cancellation and noise reduction. These processes run in the background, ensuring cleaner input without requiring additional hardware or setup.

Smart detection and seamless startup

Bot Free mode is designed to be proactive. Instead of relying on users to manually start recording, Notta Desktop can detect when a meeting begins. The user is then prompted with a simple notification so that transcription can begin with a single click.

This reduces the chance of missing important moments at the start of a call. There is no need to navigate menus or configure settings during the meeting. The system is designed to respond in real time.

Instant, compatible and private

Three practical advantages characterize the bot-free experience. First and foremost is speed. Without a bot having to join, authenticate, and request access, recording begins immediately.

Second is compatibility. Because the system works at the operating system level and not through platform-specific integrations, it works with virtually any meeting software. Whether it’s Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, Webex, Slack, Discord, or a browser-based call, the system works as long as the device can record audio.

Third is privacy. In Bot Free mode, audio is not routed through a third-party bot server. Instead, it is transmitted directly from the user’s device to Notta’s transcription service via an encrypted connection. For industries where confidentiality is important—legal, medical, financial, or managerial—this distinction is important.

The quiet upgrade

What’s special about Bot-Free isn’t that it introduces transcription, but that it removes friction. AI tools for meetings have been around for years, but their visibility is often a concern. By eliminating the need for a bot, Notta removes one of the final barriers to adoption. Meetings continue uninterrupted, participants stay focused and transcription takes place in the background.

In a world where important conversations are often forgotten, Bot-Free offers a way to capture them without changing the way those conversations happen. It’s not louder. It’s not more complex. It’s simply less noticeable – and that’s exactly the point.
