Nintendo could finally do something gamers have been asking for…forever. The company has officially confirmed that Switch 2 games will have different prices for digital and physical versions, as well as digital copies expected be cheaper.
The change will begin in May 2026, starting with titles like Yoshi and the Mysterious Book. For example, early listings on the eShop show the game will cost $59.99 digitally, rather than $69.99 physically, marking a significant shift in the way Nintendo approaches game pricing.
Why is Nintendo doing this?
Let’s face it: physical games are comparatively expensive to produce. Nintendo says the change reflects the higher cost of producing and distributing cartridges compared to digital downloads. This is consistent with what the industry has been doing for years, except that Nintendo is one of the few holdouts, with digital and physical games often costing the same.
There is also a larger strategy at play here. By making digital games cheaper, Nintendo could encourage more players to buy digitally. This essentially leads to higher margins, fewer logistics problems and greater control of the ecosystem. In other words, this isn’t just about fair prices, but also about where Nintendo wants to go with its future sales.
What does this mean for players?
So does this mean that all games will have different prices in the future? Well, not quite, and this is where things get a little messy. While Nintendo sets a lower MSRP for digital games, actual prices may still vary depending on the title and retailer. Additionally, not every game will follow the same pattern, so larger releases could still have higher prices, making the divide between digital and physical a bit inconsistent.
However, this is still a win for players. Digital games are finally getting a clear price advantage after years of being strangely equivalent (or sometimes more expensive) than physical copies. However, the compromise remains. Physical games can be resold or shared, while digital games remain tied to your account.
