After recent price hikes, YouTube Premium became harder to justify, and YouTube Music Premium followed shortly after. But Google now has a new way to make the math a little less painful.
The Gemini team just announced a bundle offer that will give users 50% off YouTube Premium for an entire year. Even though this sounds solid on paper, this is not a non-binding promotional deal.
How do you benefit from this half price offer?
YouTube Premium still gives you the usual core benefits like ad-free videos, background playback, offline downloads, and ad-free YouTube music. Halving that price for 12 months makes the subscription much easier to bear.
But there’s a catch, because of course there is. This is not a comprehensive YouTube Premium discount for everyone. It’s tied to Google AI Pro, which is part of the broader Google One subscription setup. Google’s support page states that the YouTube Premium add-on is currently only available to eligible members and some users may not be able to sign in at all. The company also states that the Google AI Pro 12-month trial membership is not eligible for the YouTube add-on package.
Why this offer is a Google lock-in benefit
Even if it isn’t stated directly, the brand obviously isn’t discounting YouTube Premium just out of generosity. Some time ago, the company increased the cloud storage capacity for Google AI Pro subscribers from 2TB to 5TB. The company has even tied this benefit to the individual YouTube Premium plan, which cannot be shared with family members. Apart from that, the offer is only available in select countries such as the USA, Brazil, Canada, Germany, Japan and France. So yes, after the price increase, YouTube Premium is now effectively half the price if you pay for Google One over Google AI Pro. But this is less a simple discount than a recent reminder from Google that the cheapest way to use one of its services is increasingly to subscribe to two.
