Ferrari has drawn a line in the sand regarding ownership of the Luce name.
As Daily Sparkz first reported last week, Mazda registered the moniker in early March 2026 – barely three weeks after the Italian performance car maker revealed details of the Ferrari Luce.
While the Mazda Luce has not been sold since 1991, the Japanese brand began using the name in 1966.

However, Ferrari seems unwilling to consider a different emblem for its upcoming electric vehicle.
“Ferrari has the right to use the ‘Ferrari Luce’ trademark internationally as it is registered under international law,” said a statement from the company’s headquarters Daily Sparkz.
“As always, Ferrari has conducted preliminary research that has not identified any active third-party rights that conflict with ours.”
Although Mazda hasn’t sold a vehicle under the Luce name since the early 1990s, Mazda only mentioned the 1969 Mazda Luce Rotary Coupe in 2017 as part of the unveiling of the Vision Coupe concept – calling it a “respectful nod to its heritage.”
Although Daily Sparkz could not determine whether the trademark had filed an application. Evidence contained as part of an independent trademark objection suggests that Ferrari may have submitted official documents that included the nameplate as early as May 2025.
Regardless, neither automaker seems willing to give up the Luce emblem so easily, and it could come down to trademark authorities deciding who can use it.
