Don’t try that $3 app that will make your MacBook groan, but I know you want it

There are useful apps, there are pointless apps, and then there’s SlapMac, which is in a category all its own.

This app has gone viral online for a very stupid (and funny) reason: it makes your MacBook play sound effects when you hit it. Just hit your Mac and hear it moan, fart, or throw punches. The app creator apparently made $5,000 in just three days, making the story even more absurd.

How does it work?

SlapMac reportedly uses the MacBook’s motion sensors to detect impacts and then responds with a sound effect when the laptop is hit. There are currently eight language packs to choose from. According to the developer, the whole thing was built in 48 hours, including the Swift app, landing page, and license setup. It was originally listed for $5, and sales apparently took off immediately, with no signs of slowing down. The small paid MacOS app is currently selling for just $3 and is becoming increasingly popular as a joke.

It now has even more features

What really pushes this into damned technical territory is the fact that SlapMac doesn’t seem to stop at the basic gimmick. The developer is actively working on this software and adding additional features like USB Moaner which does exactly what you think. The app even lets you adjust sensitivity, set a cooldown timer, and offers a lifetime strike counter if you need concrete data on how often you’ve attacked your computer.

So it has evolved beyond a meme into a real product with a real roadmap.

There is no practical reason for SlapMac to exist and that is exactly why it caught on so quickly. It’s silly, childish and, above all, mildly amusing. So no, you probably shouldn’t try the app that’s making your MacBook groan.
