Claude has just landed on Microsoft Word and it seems to be a real upgrade for document work

After releasing the Claude extension for Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint, Anthropic has finally released Claude for Microsoft Word, and it looks seriously impressive.

Anthropic says it is “designed for professionals who work intensively with documents, particularly in legal review, financial memos creation, and iterative editing.”

In other words, the people who spend half the day immersed in lengthy contracts and memos can now benefit from Claude’s superior AI capabilities.

So what can it do?

As it turns out, it can make a big difference. You can ask Claude questions about your document and receive answers with clickable quotes that jump directly to the relevant section. You can highlight a passage and ask the AI to clean it up, rewrite it, or simplify it for a non-technical audience without affecting the formatting.

This is a small but really useful detail because anyone who has ever inserted an image or copied text into Word knows that doing so will erase your formatting. There’s also a track changes mode, which shows Claude’s changes as revisions that you can accept or reject in Word’s native review pane.

Claude can also read open comment threads, edit the relevant text, and reply to the thread explaining what he changed. For anyone dealing with back-and-forth document reviews, this alone makes it a great tool.

Who can use it?

The Claude integration goes far beyond legal work. Finance teams can use it to draft memos, pull numbers from a model, and populate summary tables. You can also ask Claude to find any section of a document that touches on a specific topic and it will display results based on meaning, not just keyword matches.

Since Claude also interacted with Excel and PowerPoint, it can drag data from an open Excel file into your Word document without the usual copy and paste. I’m most excited about the cross-app features as it would make reporting easier and save a lot of time.

Claude for Word is currently in beta and is only available on Team and Enterprise plans. With this launch, it’s clearer that Anthropic wants to integrate Claude into the workplace and not just into developer tools. Whether this goal is achieved depends on how well it works in real work processes.
