AT&T has announced the Amigo Jr., a new Samsung-made smartphone designed specifically for children ages six and up with an emphasis on security, simplicity and controlled communication. The device, unveiled in AT&T’s official press release, marks the company’s latest foray into family-focused technology solutions and comes at a time when parents are increasingly worried about screen time, contact with strangers and unfiltered internet access.
The Amigo Jr. resembles a compact Android phone from Samsung, but is heavily modified and features a kid-specific interface, curated apps, and strict guidelines. Parents manage everything from an external dashboard – contacts, apps, screen limits, location settings – without letting kids disable features or bypass restrictions.
According to AT&T, the goal is to offer a phone that “gives kids a secure connection while giving parents complete confidence.”
Under the hood, the phone features 4G LTE connectivity, a simplified home screen, and a curated app store limited to the essentials like news, photos, learning tools, and parent-approved games. AT&T also offers location tracking with real-time updates, geofence alerts, and emergency call shortcuts. The carrier emphasizes that the Amigo Jr. is not designed to be a full-featured smartphone, but rather a stepping stone between a flip phone and a standard Android device.
This launch is important because it comes at a time when major technology companies are being criticized for failing to protect minors online. As concerns about social media exposure, cyberbullying and inappropriate content grow, carriers are increasingly stepping in with hardware-level solutions rather than simply offering apps or parental control settings. AT&T’s strategy positions the Amigo Jr. as a safer alternative to giving a child an entry-level Android or iPhone and hoping that parental controls remain in place.
