As if endless scrolling wasn’t bad enough, TikTok has now quietly added a hidden emoji game in DMs. The mini-game is currently live and works in both individual messages and group chats. That means the app now has another little trick that ensures users stay around even when they’re technically done watching videos.
And honestly, it’s exactly the kind of feature you’d expect from a platform that’s spent years mastering the art of turning “just five more minutes” into an hour.
What is the game and why should you be careful?
The game begins when you send a single emoji in a chat. When you tap this emoji, your chosen emoji becomes part of the game itself, floating across the screen to give you a speed boost as you try to jump up over a stack of alligators.
The goal is to climb as high as possible while avoiding skeleton alligators, some of which disappear after landing. So it’s all about quick reactions and enough chaos to try again. TikTok also displays both your score and your opponent’s high score in the top right corner. That basically makes it an easy little competition rather than just a throwaway gimmick.
It’s very on-brand
TikTok told TechCrunch that the Easter egg was introduced to make messaging more fun and add a fun, competitive element to DMs. This isn’t the first time we’ve seen something like this. Instagram added its own hidden emoji DM game two years ago, and Meta has also experimented with games in threaded chats.
On paper, this is just a harmless little DM minigame. But in practice, it’s just another engagement hook inserted into a platform that was already very good at monopolizing attention.
