If you’ve ever tried to troubleshoot Apple Watch software issues by restoring or factory resetting, you know how tedious the entire process is. The watch often gets stuck in a boot loop and never turns on.
If something like this happened and you went to an Apple Store to get it repaired, you would have to wait at least a few days because there was no in-store repair option. The Apple Store had to send it to an Apple repair center and wait for shipping, repair and return. Not exactly a great experience.
That will change soon. According to a retail source who spoke to MacRumors, Apple is preparing to allow its retail stores and Apple Authorized Service Providers to fix Apple Watch software issues in-store, which would significantly reduce repair time.
So how will it work?
Apple Stores and Authorized Repair Centers get access to a dedicated Apple Watch repair dock that connects to a Mac and can restore software to an Apple Watch right in the store. What once took days or even weeks can now be done the same day you walk in.
Although Apple introduced a wireless recovery option with watchOS 8.5 and iOS 15.4, it comes with a big catch. It only works if a restore prompt appears on the watch itself. Problems like failed updates, blocked devices or boot loops? These still require special tools that were not previously commercially available.
Why did it take so long?
Early Apple Watch models had a diagnostic port that Apple Stores could use for software fixes. Apple removed it with the Apple Watch Series 7 when switching to a wireless restore process. After that, any software repair that couldn’t be done using the wireless method had to be sent to an Apple Service Center.
This has been a reality for a few years now, so this in-store solution is really good news for Apple Watch users. Hopefully this also means fewer people will be stuck for days without monitoring, which is ultimately a software problem.
