The company’s cloud division, Amazon Web Services (AWS), has announced Amazon Connect Health, a new set of AI tools designed to help hospitals and clinics handle everyday tasks such as appointment scheduling, patient questions and medical documentation. If that sounds boring, that’s exactly the point.
You see, a lot of healthcare today is slowed down by paperwork and administrative work. Doctors and nurses often spend hours filling out forms, updating records and dealing with scheduling logistics. Amazon believes AI can take over much of this work, allowing medical staff to focus more on patients instead.
AI that helps with appointments, notes and patient requests
Think of Amazon Connect Health as a digital assistant for healthcare providers. The system can help schedule appointments, review patient information and answer common patient questions before anyone even speaks to a human staff member. It can also help doctors during and after appointments. The AI can listen in on conversations between doctors and patients, summarize the discussion and automatically create medical notes. These notes can then be converted into billing codes, patient records, or other tasks that would normally require additional manual work.
The platform can also be connected to existing electronic health record systems. This means it can collect information about a patient before an appointment and present a brief summary to the doctor. Instead of digging through the files, the doctor can enter the room already informed about the patient’s medical history.
For patients, the changes could be noticeable in smaller aspects, such as faster appointment scheduling, quicker answers to questions and less time spent in hospital call centers. According to Amazon, the goal is not to replace doctors or nurses, but to eliminate administrative burdens in healthcare. And if the system works as intended, AI could do the background work silently, actually leaving medical professionals more time to actually treat people.
