There’s something about a Maserati It makes you stop, look and just applaud. The thrilling sound, the quintessentially Italian design and the iconic Trident emblem born from Grand Prix racing and impeccable craftsmanship.
The Greek takes that same magic and distills it into something everyday yet unmistakably special. It’s Maserati’s answer to the midsize luxury SUV segment and, in true Trident fashion, refuses to blend in.
Available in three flavors – the entry-level GT, the ‘tuned’ Modena and the supercar-derived Trofeo – the Grecale range is designed for three very different types of drivers, although they all share the same DNA: unique performance, craftsmanship and character.
The Grecale GT is your starting point, although there’s nothing beginner-friendly about it. It is powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine with mild hybrid technology, which delivers around 220 kW of power and 450 Nm of torque and transmits drive to all four wheels.
It’s not sloppy at all and is fast enough to run to the shops and put a grin on your face, with 0-100km/h acceleration in around 5.6 seconds.
What’s most impressive, though, is how refined and balanced it feels. The driving experience has a calm composure that makes the GT perfect for city life, but when given a clear route it responds immediately and the signature Maserati soundtrack blares through the cabin.
Inside it is pure luxury. Genuine materials, impeccable attention to detail and a minimalist yet tailored dashboard layout anchored by Maserati’s dual screen setup. It feels like the perfect SUV for someone who wants the badge and the emotion without needing the fireworks every day.
Enter Grecale Modena and things tighten up a notch or two. It’s still powered by the same turbo four-cylinder engine, but it’s been tuned to deliver increased power of 242kW, supported by sharper throttle response and a chassis that feels even livelier.
Active suspension and a mechanical limited-slip differential give the Modena real, racy confidence in corners the GT only hints at, without sacrificing its comfort or composure.
It’s the sweet spot of the range – elegant, fast and effortlessly sophisticated. The design also goes in a sportier direction, with subtle changes to body details and wheels that make it stand out a bit without screaming for attention.
It’s the car you would drive every day and still look forward to on Sunday.
Then there is the top equipment Grecale trophy – a completely different beast with more firepower than the entire Italian Navy. Under the bonnet is Maserati’s bespoke 3.0-litre Nettuno twin-turbocharged petrol V6 – a detuned version of the same engine found in the incredibly fast MC20 supercar.
Equipped with 390kW of power and a powerful asphalt-twisting 620Nm of torque, it transforms the Grecale into something pretty exciting.
The sprint from standstill to 100km/h comes in a blisteringly fast 3.8 seconds (it feels even quicker), and the way it builds speed is even more exhilarating than starting without a start.
It races through the entire rev range and the sound is addictive too – a deep, metallic growl that only an Italian V6 can produce.
Yet despite all that power, the interior is still beautifully appointed. Soft leather, precise stitching and a design that combines sport and luxury in a way that few brands manage.
Yes, in Corsa mode it’s firm for some serious corner carving, but soften it up and it becomes a spacious grand tourer, ready for a jaunt on the B-road or a quick weekend getaway.
In all three versions, the Grecale offers functionality that makes it more than just a beautiful object.
The boot is generous at around 535 liters (slightly more in the Trofeo), and there’s plenty of space for passengers, while the technology suite is intuitive and modern. It feels like a luxury SUV in every way, but one that hasn’t forgotten how to stir emotions like only Maserati can.
On the road, Grecale stands out from all its competitors. Where others focus on precision, the Maserati relies on passion. It’s more soulful, more expressive – and that’s what makes it so attractive. You don’t just drive a Grecale, it really touches your soul.
Whether you’re drawn to the quiet confidence of the GT, the balanced energy of the uprated Modena or the sheer thrill of the Trofeo, each offers something authentic Maserati, authentic Italian.
This is an SUV that appeals to both the heart and the head – and in a segment full of sameness, it’s the one that stands out, the one that feels special.
If you haven’t experienced it yet, book a test drive. Because numbers and specifications only tell part of the story. The rest, as Maserati knows better than most, depends on how you feel about it.
