The Jaecoo J5 is getting cheaper petrol-powered variants in Australia after it began delivering its electric counterpart to customers earlier this year.
The petrol-powered versions of the small SUV, due to arrive in showrooms in June 2026, use a turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine producing 108kW of power and 210Nm of torque, paired with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). The claimed fuel consumption is 7.5 l/100 km.
Although Omoda Jaecoo is not marketed as a premium brand, it is described here as an “advancement” over parent company Chery’s brand of the same name.
Still, the base Jaecoo J5 Track with the car costs $25,990. This makes it one of the cheapest small SUVs in Australia, although it still costs $2,000 more than the cheapest Chery Tiggo 4.

It takes on the GWM Haval Jolion (currently from $24,990 on-road) and the GAC Emzoom ($25,590 before on-road costs).
The basic Jaecoo J5 Track is equipped with the following features as standard:
- 18-inch alloy wheels
- Automatic projector LED headlights
- Automatic high beam
- Windshield wipers with rain sensors
- Remote start
- Start at the push of a button
- 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster
- 13.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system
- Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
- 6 speaker sound system
- “Premium” steering wheel
- Fabric upholstery
- 6-way manually adjustable front seats
There’s also a comprehensive suite of active safety and driver assistance technology, including adaptive cruise control and a surround-view camera.
The Summit, priced at $29,990, adds:
- Fixed panoramic glass roof with electric sun protection
- Electric tailgate
- Dual zone climate control
- 8 speaker sound system
- 50W wireless phone charger
- Faux leather upholstery
- 6-way power adjustable front seats
- Heated and ventilated front seats
- Color-adjustable ambient lighting at the front
- Rear center armrest with cup holders
- Soft touch dashboard and upper front door trim
Alpine Green is the standard exterior paint finish, with Stormy Blue, Arctic White and Carbon Black exterior paint finishes available as options.
The new petrol variants are much cheaper than the Jaecoo J5 EV, which is currently only offered in Summit trim and has a drive-away price of $36,990.
The petrol J5s are differentiated from their EV siblings by a ‘waterfall’ grille, as seen on the larger Jaecoo J7 and J8, as well as unique 18-inch alloy wheels.
All J5s, whether petrol or electric, have front-wheel drive. If you want four-wheel drive in an Omoda Jaecoo vehicle, you will have to upgrade to the Jaecoo J7 or J8 or the Omoda 9.
It’s unclear why Omoda Jaecoo uses the Track nomenclature for a base variant with no performance or off-road focus, but then again the cheapest Kia Picanto is called “Sport”…
All Omoda Jaecoos are covered by an eight-year, unlimited kilometer warranty, as well as eight years of service and roadside assistance at the maximum price.
The Jaecoo J5 could prove to be a thorn in the side for the Chery brand as its Tiggo 4 struggles to maintain the top spot in the small SUV sales race against stiff competition from GWM Haval Jolion and Hyundai Kona.
As Chery launches more brands in Australia, the J5 and Tiggo 4 could also face more internal competition. For example, Lepas is expected to bring a small SUV onto the market in 2027.
