Toyota Kluger recalled | Daily Sparkz

Toyota Australia has issued a nationwide product safety recall for nearly 35,000 units of its popular product Clever On large SUVs, there is a possibility that the second-row rear seatbacks may not adequately restrain occupants in the event of a collision.

“The affected vehicles are equipped with second-row seats that use reclining devices to unlock the seatbacks, allow adjustment of the seatback tilt, and lock the seatback once adjustment is complete,” Toyota said in its recall notice.

“Because a design change made by the supplier did not take into account the balance of forces between the locking spring and the return spring, a combination of the alignment of the backrest return spring and external play between the backrest guide and the ratchet may result in the backrest teeth not fully engaging when the backrest is adjusted.

“This may result in the seatback not remaining in the locked position. A seatback that is not secured in the locked position may not be able to properly restrain occupants, increasing the risk of injury in the event of a collision at higher speeds.”
