Your ChatGPT conversations may not stay ad-free for long

What happened? Be careful if you use ChatGPT: it looks like ads may soon appear in your conversations. According to Bleeping Computer, a recent code leak on X from computer engineer Tibor Blaho suggests that OpenAI is preparing to introduce ads to ChatGPT.

  • The Android beta app’s leaked code contains references to an “ads feature,” a “search ad,” and a “search ad carousel.”
  • The ads feature appears to be tied to certain types of “searchable queries,” suggesting that not all chats will show ads.

This is important because: ChatGPT’s rise was meteoric, but profitability remained a long way off. Despite its large user base, OpenAI has yet to become profitable as the costs of operating and maintaining the AI infrastructure remain enormously high. This pressure appears to be pushing the company towards alternative revenue streams besides the ChatGPT subscription.

Ads could help offset computing and operational costs while maintaining a free tier, but at the cost of changing the user experience for many people. For users, the downside is that what once felt like a clean, ad-free assistant may become more of a search engine with sponsored links, subtle marketing, and the risk of recommendations shifting slightly toward reward rather than pure help.

Why should I care? When ads appear:

  • Your AI Chat may sometimes contain sponsored links or suggestions.
  • Some “search-like” queries may produce ad-like results before providing helpful answers.
  • Some conversations may seem less natural, especially if the ad context isn’t obvious.
  • AI may use your query history or context to deliver personalized ads, raising privacy and bias concerns.

Okay, what’s next? There is currently no official confirmation from OpenAI. The leak simply shows that the company is preparing the infrastructure. As OpenAI advances, users who value ad- and distraction-free chat may want to consider subscribing to alternative tools.
