ChatGPT ads are currently being tested and OpenAI is launching in the US with logged-in adults in the Free and Go tiers. If you are in this group, ads may appear as sponsored placements in the ChatGPT experience.
OpenAI ensures that the paid tiers remain ad-free during this test. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education are listed as ad-free, while experimenting with advertising to support free access without forcing everyone into a subscription.
You have the choice between three routes. Stay on Free and accept ads, switch to Plus or Pro, or turn off Free and accept fewer daily messages.
Ads are kept separate
According to OpenAI, ads will not be inserted into the answers you request. Sponsored placements should be clearly marked and visually separated from normal conversation so that it is clear what is paid for and what is not.
This separation is also the company’s most important reassurance. According to OpenAI, ads have no influence on ChatGPT’s responses and responses remain tailored to what is most helpful to you. If you’re worried that an advertising model might silently control recommendations, this is the line OpenAI draws.
Relevance comes from your use
OpenAI describes ad matching as a relevance system. It can use the topic you discussed as well as signals from your past chats and your previous interactions with ads. In the company’s example, an ad for a meal kit or grocery delivery might pop up in a recipe chat, and if multiple advertisers match, the system is designed to prioritize the most relevant ones.
This is where the opt-out compromise becomes real. If you unsubscribe while still using Free, you will forego the personalized sponsored tier but will also receive fewer daily free messages. If you want ad-free and no reduced limits, OpenAI’s stated answer is a paid plan.
Limits, eligibility, next steps
Since this is a test, the big question is expansion, how quickly it expands beyond the original US group, and what the ad load will be. OpenAI also says it doesn’t show ads to users it knows or predicts are under 18, suggesting eligibility checks before placements appear.
If you want to avoid surprises, open your settings now and see what options are available in your account. This is where the decision is made when ads appear in your chats.
