After relaunching the brand with #1, #3, #5 and #6, Clever finally dropped one #2 on 2026 Beijing Motor Show.
Concept #2 provides a preview of the production model, which is scheduled to premiere at this year’s Paris Motor Show in October. The number 2 will continue the vehicle series with which the brand began in 1998, when the two-seat city coupe with a rear engine and rear-wheel drive went into production.
In 2002, the car was renamed ForTwo and retained that name until production of the third generation ended in 2024.
The concept is just 2792mm long, which would mean that if the new car goes through to production, it will be the longest model in the City-Coupé/ForTwo/#2 line. The second and third generation models were each 2695mm long from end to end, while the original was only 2500mm long.
Details on the all-electric #2 are scarce, but Smart says the production car will have a WLTP range of around 300km and feature vehicle-to-load support, allowing it to power external devices. Although no maximum DC charging rate is specified, the brand says the No. 2 model can charge from 10 to 80 percent in under 20 minutes.
Smart also states that the number 2 will have a turning circle of just 6.95 meters.
Due to the vehicle’s small dimensions, the number 2 uses the new Electric Compact Architecture. Since the brand is now a joint venture between Mercedes-Benz and Geely, other models in the current Smart range share the same platforms as other Geely models.
The production car’s bodywork is expected to match that of Concept #2, but it’s likely that most of the show car’s more imaginative details won’t make it to the factory. These include tons of gold trim, door handles with leather straps, protruding wheel covers made of opaque plastic, and a grille cover that resembles a Louis Vuitton bag.
Geely acquired a 50 percent stake in the Smart brand in 2020, with the Chinese company responsible for engineering and Mercedes-Benz responsible for design.
Production of all new models now takes place in China, as the original Smart factory in Hambach, France, was sold to Ineos.
While Smart originally made its name with tiny city cars, all models released since the brand’s rebirth under Geely/Mercedes-Benz have been 4.2m or larger. In fact, the upcoming No. 6 sedan is about the same size as the Toyota Camry.
Concept #2 thus marks a return to the brand’s original ethos and is introduced under the slogan “unconventional again”. Interestingly, Smart has skipped the No. 4 name in its current model lineup, suggesting it could follow the No. 2 with a longer four-door, four-seat variant that will continue the ForFour’s dormant lineage.
