Meta is introducing new protection for WhatsApp users that could stop scammers from hijacking your account before you even realize what’s happening. It’s one of several new anti-fraud measures the company is rolling out across its platforms, and this one is particularly clever.
How exactly does someone steal your WhatsApp account?
To understand why this update is important, it’s helpful to know how the scam works. Scammers pose as a legitimate service, such as a talent competition or election campaign, and ask you to enter your phone number on a website and then send a code to your WhatsApp.
In some cases, you will simply be asked to scan a QR code. Both methods aim to link your WhatsApp account to a device controlled by the scammer, giving them full access to your messages and contacts. It’s a sneaky trick that many people can fall for because there is no obvious warning sign at the moment.
How does the new warning system work?
WhatsApp hosts our most personal chats, and a scammer’s worst nightmare to gain access to. With this in mind, Meta is adding a new warning system to prevent this from happening in the first place.
WhatsApp now analyzes behavioral signals to detect when a device link request appears suspicious. If something is wrong, you will receive an alert warning you that it could be a scam. This gives you a chance to stop and think again before something happens.
What it means to you
WhatsApp has over two billion users, making it a prime target for scammers. This new alert system won’t stop every attack, but it will provide a much-needed boost in speed between you and a scammer trying to take over your account. If you receive any of these warnings, take them seriously.
