The Toyota bZ4X has been somewhat of a wallflower in the midsize electric SUV segment, but its sales are expected to increase fivefold this year.
Last year, Toyota Australia delivered just 1041 examples – 6.6 percent more than the previous year, but less than a tenth of the BYD Sealion 7’s total.
“The updated model that we recently launched has been very, very well received… Based on this positive response, we plan to deliver 5000 bZ4Xs this year,” Toyota Australia vice president of sales, marketing and franchise John Pappas told Australian media Daily Sparkz.
That’s a total of over 200,000 vehicles that the Japanese brand is expected to deliver in 2026. Last year, 239,863 vehicles were delivered.

Based on last year’s sales figures, this target for the bZ4X would result in it becoming Australia’s fourth best-selling electric vehicle (EV) and third best-selling electric SUV.
Last year, the Tesla Model Y topped the sales charts with 22,239 deliveries, followed by the Sealion 7 (13,410), the Tesla Model 3 (6,617) and the Kia EV5 (4,787).
Toyota has already delivered 840 bZ4Xs in the first quarter of this year, putting it on track to beat its 2025 result by mid-year, but still behind the Kia EV5 (1148).
The bZ4X has left its Subaru Solterra twin in the dust. The Subaru has only been sold 149 times this year, despite a sales increase of 246.5 percent.
Ahead of the bZ4X’s (delayed) Australian launch in early 2024, Toyota had stated in August 2023 that it expected to deliver “several thousand cars in 2024”, only to reduce that number to just 1500 vehicles in January 2024. Finally, 977 examples were delivered in 2024, followed by 1041 in 2025.
Toyota cut prices for the entire bZ4X range by up to $10,010 as part of a 2026 facelift, although the company said in July 2024 it had no plans to cut prices.
This mid-life update brought with it a new 74.7 kWh lithium-ion battery and new electric motors that deliver more power, torque and electric range.
The bZ4X also received an exterior refresh, including a version of Toyota’s latest “Hammerhead” family face, as well as more standard equipment including a larger 14.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system.
The midsize electric SUV will be joined in May by the related bZ4X Touring with a more traditional station wagon silhouette. Mr. Pappas did not provide sales targets for this model.
Toyota confirmed back in 2023 that it would be one of three electric cars coming onto the market here by 2026, alongside the HiLux EV.
Like the bZ4X, the bZ4X Touring will also have a Subaru twin: the Trailseeker. It is expected to arrive in the second quarter (April to June) of this year.
Toyota Australia’s electric vehicle offering will continue to grow, with the C-HR+ small electric SUV due to launch in 2027.
