The US has just given the green light to electric flying taxis

While electric “flying cars” still sound like science fiction, the United States is taking a big step toward making them a reality. The federal government just approved a series of pilot programs to test electric aircraft in 26 states. This would allow companies to begin limited air taxi trials as early as this summer.

Electric air taxis are getting closer and closer to reality

The initiative is part of a broader initiative by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Department of Transportation aimed at accelerating the development of electric aviation technologies. So instead of having to wait for a full certification process, selected companies can carry out real-world tests as part of controlled programs.

The US government has selected eight pilot proposals to be conducted in 26 states and include a range of real-world use cases. Some projects will focus on urban air transport (fancier name for air taxi service), while the rest will explore other applications such as cargo delivery, regional transport, medical flights and emergency scenarios.

The testing will span multiple locations across the U.S., including states such as New York, Texas, Florida, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Louisiana. Electric air taxis are often referred to as eVTOL (Electric Vertical Take Off and Landing) aircraft because, like helicopters, they are designed for vertical take-off and landing. The main difference here, however, is the electric drive systems.

While we are still years away from commercial operations, the success of this program could bring the industry significantly closer to launching commercial air taxi services. Many believe these vehicles could help ease road congestion and provide new logistics options for freight and medical services. The testing period is expected to last up to three years, giving regulators and companies time to assess the safety, infrastructure requirements and operational framework of these new electric aircraft.
