The AirPods Max 2 are finally here — but Apple hasn’t solved everything people wanted

After five years, Apple has updated the AirPods Max with a new H2 chip, improved noise cancellation and a wider range of features that bring them closer to the rest of its audio range. On paper, this is a sensible improvement. In practice it is more selective.

What Apple changed this time

The biggest change is the move from two H1 chips to two H2 chips, the same silicon used in the newer AirPods Pro. This upgrade enables a number of features previously missing from the Max.

Active noise cancellation is now said to be up to 1.5 times more effective, while transparency mode has been tuned to sound more natural. Adaptive Audio combines both modes depending on the environment and Conversation Awareness reduces playback when you start speaking.

Apple has also added personalized volume that adapts to your listening habits over time, as well as volume reduction to handle sudden spikes in outside noise. Live translation is now also supported, allowing real-time conversations to take place across multiple languages through the headphones.

Sound improvements are part of this upgrade

Alongside these changes, Apple is introducing a custom high dynamic range amplifier designed to improve bass response, vocal clarity and instrument separation while reducing distortion at higher volumes.

The original AirPods Max already offered a warm, balanced sound signature, so this update seems to focus on refinement rather than a complete retune. The combination of improved processing and stronger noise cancellation is likely to bring the biggest noticeable benefits.

Lossless audio is available, but with a limitation

Lossless audio support has finally been added, with 24-bit and 48kHz playback now available via a wired USB-C connection.

Over Bluetooth, audio is still limited to AAC and higher bandwidth wireless codecs are not supported. That means a cable is still required for lossless listening, which is what makes a premium pair of headphones in 2026.

Additional functions and how they are implemented in use

Apple is also expanding functionality beyond audio playback. The Digital Crown can now act as a remote shutter release for an iPhone camera, while voice isolation is a way to improve call clarity and enable more flexible recording scenarios.

Head gesture controls have been added for interacting with Siri, allowing users to respond by nodding or shaking their heads. These features complement the AirPods Max with those already available on the AirPods Pro, although their practicality varies depending on the context, especially with a larger over-ear design.

What hasn’t changed still stands out

Despite the internal upgrades, the physical design remains largely the same. The AirPods Max 2 retain the metal construction, non-foldable structure and Smart Case, which continues to provide minimal protection and primarily serves to put the headphones in a low-power state.

There’s still no dedicated power button, so the case is still required to manage battery usage. The battery life remains unchanged at around 20 hours, which is increasingly modest compared to competitors who offer 30 hours or more.

The headphones are slightly heavier at about 386 grams, don’t fold for easier storage, and don’t yet have an official water or dust resistance rating.

What this upgrade really brings

The AirPods Max 2 are a clear upgrade in processing and software-driven areas. The H2 chip enables a more adaptive listening experience, while improvements in noise cancellation and sound processing should result in better overall performance.

At the same time, the design, usability limitations and long-standing hardware issues remain unchanged.

Is it enough to justify the update?

That depends on what you were waiting for. If better sound refinement, stronger noise cancellation and deeper integration into the Apple ecosystem were priorities, this update is it.

If the expectation was a broader redesign aimed at comfort, portability and everyday usability, the AirPods Max 2 will feel more familiar than new.
