The entrance fee of Skodas flagship Terrific has fallen on $66,990 drive away with the introduction of a new basic plug-in hybrid variant (PHEV).
Aimed primarily at fleet customers, the Superb PHEV Select is $8,000 cheaper than the Sportline and will only be available as a station wagon.
It also becomes the cheapest PHEV wagon for sale Down Under, displacing the smaller, sportier Cupra Leon Sportstourer VZe, which is priced at $69,990 (excluding on-road costs). However, it may not hold that title for long, as BYD is about to launch the Seal 6 as a station wagon here.
Known overseas as the Superb iV, the Superb PHEV Select is powered by a version of Volkswagen Group’s second-generation plug-in hybrid system for vehicles on the MQB platform.

The powertrain combines a new 110 kW 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline four-cylinder engine and a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission with an electric motor and a 25.7 kWh lithium-ion battery.
System outputs are quoted at 150kW and 350Nm – the lower output of the PHEV system available locally in other Volkswagen Group models.
The Superb PHEV Select offers an all-electric range of 112 km on the European WLTP cycle and can be quickly charged using a public DC fast charger of up to 50 kW.
Externally, the Superb PHEV Select is distinguished by its 19-inch “Veritate” alloy wheels and chrome accents.
Key interior features include a 13-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless smartphone mirroring, a 10-inch digital instrument cluster, a wireless phone charger, tri-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats and a power liftgate.
However, there’s no mention of a head-up display, a premium sound system, ventilated front seats or a heated steering wheel, with all of the above features seemingly limited to the range-topping turbo petrol Sportline.
However, Skoda’s Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC) adaptive suspension remains standard.
There’s also a long list of safety features, including 10 airbags, adaptive cruise control with stop/go, autonomous emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, emergency steering assist, safe exit warning, and front and rear parking sensors with a rearview camera.
Skoda’s local director Lucie Kuhn said it previously Daily Sparkz that the Superb PHEV best suits companies in the market for an environmentally friendly luxury car.
“I would say that the Superb PHEV will be aimed primarily at fleet vehicles, primarily for companies – it is a kind of executive car, so we expect to go in that direction for companies that need a certain environmental policy,” Ms Kuhn said.
