Our bedroom is ready! (Before and After)

Our bedroom is ready!! And that completes the main areas of our bedroom suite – the foyer, the walk-in closet with laundry room, our bathroom and now our bedroom. I still have one more area to finish (the storage room), but that will have to wait a while. At least for now I can close the closet doors (which is currently a bathroom) and everything else is taken care of. So without further delay, here is our new finished bedroom…

I absolutely love how this bedroom turned out. It was a massive undertaking. If you’ve been around for a while, you know that this room used to be our home gym. (You can see the entire before and after picture of our home gym here.) And it would probably still be our home gym if we hadn’t had some major flooring issues that required all new subflooring and hardwood floors. During this disaster, we decided to convert this area of our home into our master bedroom. And looking back, I’m so grateful that it turned out that way. I think using this area of the house as a bedroom suite exceeded my expectations and turned out much better than our original plans to expand the house with a brand new master bedroom and closet.

Let me show you how this area has evolved over the years. When we bought the house this room looked like this…

And then I turned the space into a home gym that looked like this…

And now this is our bedroom, and the same view looks like this…

The room has always had a small “hallway” in the entrance, but it used to have a door that led to this small hallway and into the room.

We still have that little hallway leading from the foyer to the bedroom, but it’s about three feet shorter now than it was when the space was a home gym. And now there is no door from the foyer to the bedroom. I had this door and the wall around it removed so that the two areas are open to each other.

This is what the wall at the front of the house looked like when we bought the house. It had a window and you can see that there was a closet on the wall to the left of that wall.

When this was our home gym, we kept this window and I left the closet area open (i.e. there were no doors on the closet) to make it feel more open to the room.

But when we decided to use this as our bedroom, I had the closet completely removed to make the actual bedroom larger and we had the window replaced with a door.

Here’s a closer look at what the closet wall looked like when we bought the house…

And this is what it looked like when it opened for our home gym.

And now the walls that surrounded the closet area are completely gone, leaving more room for an armchair and a dresser. Removing the cabinet makes the room appear much larger.

And then if you look back at the entrance to the room, you can see that the closet formed the small “hallway” entrance to the room, but was only about three feet long, which was the depth of the closet behind that wall. You could still see the door.

But when we moved the wall in the hallway (i.e. foyer) to align the adjacent room and convert it into our bathroom, the “hallway” entrance to the room became about twice as long and you could no longer see the door from that view.

But now that the closet walls are gone and the door and the wall surrounding the door are gone, the area feels much more open. There is still a small hallway from the foyer to the bedroom, but it is again about three feet long. And without the door and the wall surrounding the door, it feels much more open now.

When we bought the house, this wall of the room was a solid wall. The original master bedroom was on the other side of this wall and both this room and the original master bedroom were accessed via doors in the hallway.

But when we turned the original master bedroom into our new master bathroom, we moved the wall in the hallway, closed the door that originally led into that room from the hallway, and added a new door from the home gym into the new master bathroom. Our original plan was to add a new master bedroom on the other side of our new bathroom. If we had followed this plan, all three rooms – the home gym, the new master bathroom, and our new master bedroom – would be connected by doors leading from one room to the next.

But now that this room is our bedroom, our bathroom is very conveniently located through this door.

These are all the before and after pictures I have for you. Now let’s get to the details. The wallpaper I used is no longer available, but it closely resembles a grasscloth wallpaper from Thibault. So if you are looking for teal grasscloth wallpaper, I recommend you look there first.

The ceramic birds are from Amazon (affiliate link) and I love birds so I used a lot of them and created a freeform wall installation out of them.

I have to say that the Fandelier far exceeded our expectations. Matt has commented several times now about how much he loves it. We were both surprised at how much airflow this little fan creates.

I took so many pictures (a ridiculous amount to be honest) so I’ll keep my commentary to a minimum and let you all just look around.

I originally planned to frame the TV and then find a nice art screensaver for the TV. But in the end I came to the conclusion that I don’t mind having a huge TV hanging on the wall of our bedroom and I don’t want to hide it. I let the actual work of art be a work of art, and I let the television be just a television. I’m actually quite happy with the look, and more importantly, it works great for us.

I think that pretty much covers it all! If I’ve left anything out that you’d like more information about, just let me know!
