Large SUVs are big business in China right now, and BYD is jumping into the fray.
The BYD Great Tang was revealed in a file from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), shared by Car news China.
The electric SUV is 5263-5302 mm long, 1999 mm wide and 1790-1890 mm high with a wheelbase of 3130 mm.
This makes it the BYD brand’s largest model, although it is still slightly smaller than the U8 from BYD’s high-end Yangwang brand.
This also makes the Great Tang larger than a Toyota LandCruiser 300 Series, which, depending on the variant, is up to 5015 mm long, 1990 mm wide and 1950 mm high and has a wheelbase of 2850 mm.
Scheduled to officially launch in China in the first half of 2026, the electric Great Tang will be offered with a choice of 300kW and 370kW single-motor powertrains, as well as a dual-motor powertrain with a 215kW front motor and a 370kW rear motor.
It will be equipped with lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, which BYD specializes in, but there are no specifications yet.
Depending on the variant, the curb weight is between 2640 kg and 2970 kg.
The Great Tang, as the name suggests, will be the flagship of BYD’s Dynasty model range.
Important details are identical to other Dynasty vehicles such as the Tang L (sold here as the Sealion 8), such as the full-width front trim piece that integrates the headlights; the fold-out door handles; and the continuous taillight bar.
However, these are attached to a boxy body, albeit with fairly clear flanks and a sloping window line on the D-pillar.
The MIIT filing also reveals a wide range of wheel designs, including a bold, polished monoblock style. However, there is no insight into the interior of the Great Tang.
BYD’s offering for the Chinese market is divided into Dynasty models (like the Yuan Plus, also known as Atto 3) and Ocean models (like the Dolphin). Some Dynasty vehicles receive Ocean nameplates for export, such as the Sealion 8.
As a flagship SUV with a length of more than 5.2 meters, the BYD Great Tang will compete with models such as the Xpeng GX, Li Auto L9 and Aito M9.
It’s unclear whether BYD Australia will offer it here, as the company has just launched its premium Denza brand, which offers the similarly sized – albeit plug-in hybrid – N8L and N9 SUVs in China.
