LG’s next-generation 120Hz display promises a huge boost in laptop battery life

LG Display has begun mass production of a new LCD laptop panel with Oxide 1Hz technology, which automatically adjusts the refresh rate between 1Hz and 120Hz based on screen activity. This technology is being mass-produced in laptops for the first time and the increase in battery life is truly impressive.

But we’ve had a display with a 120Hz refresh rate for a long time, so how can this be the first time? Well, not all 120Hz displays are created equal. Most laptop displays dynamically refresh the screen between 25Hz and 120Hz depending on the content being displayed.

This LG panel can drop to 1Hz when your screen is largely silent, such as when you’re checking email or reading a research paper, and ramp up to 120Hz when you’re watching a sporting event or playing a game.

Why is the 1Hz refresh rate even important?

The refresh rate is how many times your screen redraws itself per second. A higher refresh rate ensures smoother images, making it ideal for fast-moving content.

The problem is that most laptop screens constantly operate at high refresh rates or cannot refresh to a low enough value, which can have a significant impact on battery life, even when nothing is moving on the screen. That’s wasted energy, and your battery is paying for it.

LG Display has developed its own circuit algorithms and new materials to make the power saving mode actually work. The result is a 48% improvement in battery life compared to existing solutions. This is a huge improvement that will extend your laptop’s battery life.

Who gets it first?

LG Display is supplying these panels to Dell for the first time for its premium XPS series. Dell introduced new XPS models with this panel at CES 2026 in January. LG Display is also planning a 1Hz OLED version using the same technology to begin mass production in 2027.
