Chery claims that its new generation of super hybrid powertrains could theoretically allow some models to travel up to 2000 kilometers without stopping.
At a presentation to Australian media, Peter Matkin, Chery’s executive director of engineering, revealed details of its fifth-generation super hybrid powertrains, which combine highly efficient petrol engines with plug-in hybrid technology.
While the claims have yet to be confirmed in practice, the “aimed” combined driving range could provide uninterrupted travel from Adelaide to Brisbane.

According to Mr Matkin, tests based on WLTC logs suggest fuel consumption figures of just 2.98 liters per 100 kilometers, although it is unclear what battery state of charge these are based on.
The engineer also claims that the petrol engines have achieved a thermal efficiency of around 45 percent – making them just as efficient as Formula 1 cars from a decade ago.
Thanks to two special transmissions – one for smaller, lighter vehicles and the other for heavier models – according to Chery, power losses in the drive train were reduced to up to 23 percent.
“This is the result of more than 25 years of working on hybrid support,” Mr Matkin said.
In addition to fuel efficiency, the new powertrains should enable a sprint time from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.3 seconds and a top speed of 180 km/h.
Mr Matkin claims the vehicles can operate in temperatures between -30 and over 40 degrees Celsius, with “special packages” developed for countries with temperatures above 50 degrees.
“And these numbers serve to answer a real question when our customers drive and are exposed to these high temperatures and long-distance travel.”
The Chery brand currently offers plug-in hybrid versions of the Tiggo 7, Tiggo 8 and Tiggo 9 in Australia.
The Tiggo 7 and Tiggo 8 Super Hybrid have an 18.4 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery and a single electric motor, while the Tiggo 9 Super Hybrid has a larger 34 kWh pack and two electric motors. All feature a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine.
Chery claims an all-electric range of 93 km, 95 km and 170 km for the Tiggo 7, Tiggo 8 and Tiggo 9 respectively, all based on the NEDC cycle.
In terms of combined range, Chery claims 1200 km in the Tiggo 7 and Tiggo 8 and 1250 km in the Tiggo 9.
