If you were expecting ChatGPT to get an “erotic mode,” that idea is officially off the table. According to the Financial Times, OpenAI’s sharp mode will be suspended “indefinitely.”
Insights into OpenAI’s struggle to bring Adult Mode to life
OpenAI’s so-called “adult mode” for ChatGPT was never intended to be completely explicit. Previous reports suggested it would be limited to text-based erotica, with strict guidelines to avoid graphic or unsafe content. The feature was also expected to be limited to verified adult users, adding another layer of control.
However, the rollout was repeatedly delayed. OpenAI cited security concerns, technical limitations, and the need to prioritize broader improvements to ChatGPT’s core features.
The company plans to refocus on its core products for the time being. The move also comes after both employees and investors raised concerns about the broader social impact of sexualized AI content.
OpenAI has stated that it wants to study the long-term effects of explicit conversations and emotional dependence before making a final decision, noting that there is currently no solid evidence to guide such decisions.
Why withdrawing from OpenAI actually makes sense at the moment
Since it was announced that OpenAI was planning an adult mode for ChatGPT, numerous concerns have been raised. AI chatbots, including ChatGPT, have now been involved in legal cases where conversations have ended in loss of life. In recent years there have been a number of suicides and incidents of violent behavior linked to the influence of AI.
Last year, a California couple sued OpenAI, claiming their son took his own life after ChatGPT encouraged him to do so. Matthew Bergman of the Social Media Victims Law Center has filed seven lawsuits against OpenAI, including one with Laura Marquez-Garrett, whose 17-year-old son also hanged himself after ChatGPT conversations.
Additionally, there have been numerous cases of ChatGPT giving harmful medical advice, resulting in a rare case of bromide poisoning in a person. Added to this are the psychological impacts, where users have been found to form deeper (and troubling) bonds with AI personalities.
Just a day ago, OpenAI also discontinued its Sora AI video generator, sparking a copyright conflict and some disturbing internet trends of its own. In such worrisome scenarios, it would make sense for OpenAI to cancel “adult mode” for ChatGPT rather than play with another problem.
