In late 2024, AI-generated images of fake pickup trucks were posted online, allegedly from heavy equipment manufacturers Caterpillar and John Deere.
Since the images caused a lot of excitement among the fans of these brands, caterpillar actually unveiled a real pickup truck concept at a construction show in Las Vegas this week.
Called Cat truckAccording to the company, the vehicle is “equipped with Cat technology,” which appears to include ADAS capabilities, an AI assistant, and an integrated drone launch system.

“They dreamed of torque and pulling power,” the company said in a press release.
“These were the easy tasks for Caterpillar, so we went a step further to figure out how we could help them even more. We dreamed of a technologically advanced system that would transform every jobsite.”
“So we did something bold. We built it.”
But it’s not a basic design powered by a Caterpillar powertrain; instead, it appears that the company has simply made some styling changes to a Ford F-Series Super Duty pickup truck, in addition to the conceptual technological changes.
However, the company doesn’t seem to shy away from this fact, as its promotional video clearly shows a construction site manager getting in and out of his Ford Super Duty, with the Caterpillar add-ons assisting him in his work.
Commenters online were quick to criticize, saying the concept consisted of little more than a rushed vinyl wrap, some minor bodywork changes, and a Cat emblem on the front.
The heavy equipment giant has been tight-lipped about details about the Cat truck, suggesting the technology may be more theoretical at this point.
If the Cat Truck goes into production as a redesigned Ford Super Duty, it wouldn’t be the first time a heavy-duty vehicle manufacturer has sold a pickup truck.
The former American truck manufacturer Sterling sold a revised version of the Dodge Ram, the Bullet, from 2007 to 2009.
