The Audi Concept C will enter production in 2027, according to the German automaker, despite shrinking profits and rumors that electric versions of the Porsche 718 Boxster and Cayman twins – which share the same platform – have been shelved.
Audi introduced the elegant two-door Concept C in September last year, the design of which is reminiscent of the highly polarizing Jaguar Type 00 Concept.
The production version of the Concept C will be purely electric; there are no plans to offer an additional version with a combustion engine for the planned market launch in 2027.
Still, the future of the entire Concept C project is in question as unconfirmed reports have led to the Porsche 718 electric duo being axed after Porsche scaled back its electric vehicle (EV) targets and posted a 10 percent drop in sales in 2025.

The 718 project itself reportedly suffered cost overruns and multiple development delays, putting pressure on the program as Porsche – once the most profitable automaker per vehicle on the planet – came under financial strain.
Although Porsche hasn’t officially confirmed the end of the 718 electric vehicles, the reports have fueled further speculation that the Audi Concept C, announced last year with plans for a showroom version in 2027, could also be on the way out.
Audi has accordingly denied this Engine1by telling the publication that the reports were “pure speculation,” but without providing any further comment or definitive confirmation.
The situation comes as Audi also faces major challenges with the profitability of electric vehicles. According to reports, the automaker’s profit slump in the first half of 2025 was described as a “case of crisis” within the Volkswagen Group.
Like Porsche, Audi is part of the larger Volkswagen Group, with brands across the group sharing components to reduce costs – such as the previous-generation Audi R8, which partnered with the Lamborghini Huracán.
At its unveiling, Audi described the Concept C as using an electric platform from the Volkswagen Group, and while this wasn’t officially confirmed, the underpinnings of the 718 Boxster and Cayman seemed to provide a suitable foundation.
If the Porsche EV sports cars are canceled – what German release Handelsblatt said the company would cost billions of euros – the financial viability of the Concept C as a road car could be called into question.
Still, Audi has said that the Concept C, announced after suffering significant financial losses and the closure of its Belgian factory, is an essential part of its long-term turnaround plan.
A high-performance RS6 e-tron station wagon was also canceled and at the end of last year it agreed to sell the majority of its shares in the famous design and engineering firm Italdesign to the US company UST.
At the same time, a recovery of sorts began, with an initial global sales decline of 5.9 percent between January and June, improving to a year-on-year decline of three percent, with 1.6 million vehicles sold worldwide this year.
This included 223,000 electric vehicles sold, an increase of 36 percent. Audi sold 1585 electric vehicles in Australia, placing it 14th in local electric sales.
Overall, Audi Australia ended 2025 with an increase of 4.4 percent compared to the previous year and rose one place to 18th in the national sales ranking.
