Recent leaks suggest that Amazon is preparing to return to smartphones with an AI-focused device. However, analysts are not convinced that the timing makes sense.
A new report says industry experts believe this could be “the worst possible time” for Amazon to re-enter the smartphone market, even after adding AI to the mix.
Why an Amazon AI phone doesn’t make sense right now
One of the biggest concerns outlined in the report is the overall state of the smartphone industry. Due to rising component costs and ongoing memory shortages, the market is expected to decline by approximately 13% in 2026. So Amazon would not only move into a competitive area; It would also be an entry into a market that is in decline.
But how do you compete with Samsung and Apple?
That’s not ideal for Amazon, which is trying to make a comeback after the failure of the Fire Phone in 2014. Amazon has already bet heavily on artificial intelligence, and the AI experience could be solid. But competition remains another major obstacle to success. The original Fire Phone struggled for a number of reasons, including broader ecosystems and the polish of experienced smartphone makers.
So AI alone may not be enough.
Amazon’s rumored device, reportedly codenamed “Transformer,” is expected to rely heavily on AI. It will likely integrate Alexa and aim to reduce reliance on traditional apps. In theory, this sounds state of the art and sets it apart from the crowd. However, this isn’t the time we see an AI-first product struggling to gain popularity. In the end, these devices seem more like experiments than essentials.
There are claims that Amazon is building a more minimalist or “secondary” phone. Although there is demand for simpler devices, analysts say the market is too small to justify Amazon’s size and ambitions.
