AI frame generation is coming to the PS5 Pro

Sony is preparing to take its PlayStation graphics technology a step further, with AI-powered imaging now confirmed as a future feature for PlayStation platforms. Although details are still limited, the update could significantly improve visual smoothness and performance – especially on hardware like the PS5 Pro.

A new step beyond upscaling

In a recent interview with Digital Foundry, PlayStation lead system architect Mark Cerny confirmed that machine learning-based frame generation is in development and “should be seen on PlayStation platforms at some point.”

Frame generation uses AI to create entirely new frames between rendered frames, effectively increasing the perceived frame rate without requiring additional raw GPU power. This technology is already widely used on PCs through solutions such as Nvidia DLSS and AMD FSR.

Sony has already introduced AI to its ecosystem through PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) – an upscaling technology that improves image sharpness on the PS5 Pro. The addition of frame generation would take things a step further, focusing not only on sharper graphics but also smoother gameplay.

Why this matters for gaming performance

Frame generation represents a major shift in the way performance gains are achieved. Instead of relying solely on more powerful hardware, AI can fill the gaps by intelligently predicting movements and generating intermediate images.

This could result in games appearing smoother – perhaps at higher frame rates like 60fps or even 120fps – without the console having to render every frame natively.

This opens up new opportunities for developers. They could improve graphical fidelity while maintaining smooth performance. For players, this means a more responsive and visually immersive experience, especially in fast-paced games.

However, the technology is not without compromises. Experts note that AI-generated frames can introduce input latency, meaning there may be a slight delay between the player’s actions and on-screen reactions.

What it means for PS5 Pro users

Although Sony hasn’t explicitly confirmed that Frame Generation will be available on the PS5 Pro, the console is currently the most likely candidate. The PS5 Pro already has improved GPU performance and AI-driven technologies, making it better suited to advanced rendering techniques.

If implemented, frame generation could significantly extend the lifespan of the console by enabling higher performance without the need for new hardware. It could also help bridge the gap between console and high-end PC gaming experiences.

However, the timetable for the introduction remains uncertain. Cerny has stated that no further releases are planned in the near future, suggesting the feature may not be available until 2027 or later.

What comes next

Sony’s collaboration with AMD on projects like Project Amethyst suggests that AI-driven rendering will play a central role in future PlayStation systems.

Frame generation could eventually become a standard feature across the PlayStation ecosystem, potentially fully featured in next-generation hardware like the PlayStation 6.

The confirmation signals a clear direction for now: AI will become the backbone of console graphics development. Whether it appears on the PS5 Pro or the next generation of consoles, Frame Generation is poised to redefine the look and feel of gaming for years to come.
