Samsung’s foldable Galaxy Z Flip 8 could miss out on major camera upgrades

If you’ve been eagerly waiting for the Galaxy Z Flip 8 and hoping that Samsung would improve the flip phone’s camera setup, there’s bad news. According to Dutch publication Galaxy Club, the Flip 8 (set to launch alongside the Fold 8) retains the same camera setup as the Flip 7.

For those still in the loop, the Flip 7 features a dual-camera array on the back (or top screen), consisting of a 50MP primary camera (f/1.8) and a 12MP ultra-wide-angle camera (f/2.2). There is a 10MP (f/2.2) selfie shooter on the inside screen of the flip phone.

It’s not broken, so Samsung won’t fix it

According to the report, the Flip 8 could launch later this year with the same three cameras we saw on the Flip 7. What’s even more interesting (and disappointing) is that Samsung used the same camera setup on the Flip 6.

So if you’re using the Flip 6 or Flip 7 and are planning to upgrade to the 2026 Flip phone, cameras may not be the reason to upgrade.

Now there is a small chance that Samsung will optimize the camera sensor, perhaps increasing its size or aperture, effectively improving the overall image and video quality delivered.

I’d say that could happen, especially since the company is doing something similar with the Galaxy S26 Ultra: the same main camera as the S25 Ultra, but with a larger aperture. This currently remains a guess.

However, the update didn’t surprise me, especially since the Flip 8 is reportedly launching at the same price as the Flip 7, $1,099.99 for the base 256GB variant and $1,219.99 for the 512GB storage variant.

Given the rising cost of memory and components, it’s almost certain that Samsung will forgo non-essential upgrades with the Flip 8. In fact, I expect the flip phone to carry most of its specs from the Flip 7, including the displays, cameras, and battery.

What could change, however, is the chipset. According to rumors, the Flip 8 could come with Samsung’s Exynos 2600 chipset, the first smartphone chip based on 2nm manufacturing technology. However, further details about the Galaxy Unpacked mid-year event, including the date and time, remain under wraps.
