If you’ve been patiently waiting for the successor to the OnePlus Open, there’s bad news for you. According to a Smartprix report citing Indian tipster Yogesh Brar, OnePlus has reportedly canceled plans to launch the rumored OnePlus Open 2.
So far, the foldable device was scheduled to hit the market worldwide in the third quarter of 2026, i.e. between July and September. It would have been the company’s big start to continue the Open brand before it launches the successor to the popular OnePlus 15 later this year.
OnePlus Open 2 could have been an excellent foldable device
According to reports, the Open 2 was in the advanced testing phase where the company was finalizing its specifications. Considered a rebranded version of the Oppo Find N6, the Open 2 would have featured an 8.12-inch 2K foldable display and a 6.6-inch AMOLED cover screen, both with a blisteringly fast 165Hz refresh rate.
In terms of performance, the foldable device could have offered the top performance and gaming capabilities of Qualcomm’s latest flagship chipset, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. Additionally, the device is said to have a triple rear camera setup and 50MP sensors, one of which would have been paired with a telephoto zoom lens.
We would have gotten a 6,000mAh battery for a foldable book model, as well as support for 80W wired charging and 50W wireless charging. However, the increase in specs and performance would have led to a price increase (the OnePlus Open costs $1,699), compounded by the looming storage crisis already reshaping the smartphone industry.
This is probably why the company decided to discontinue the phone. Had OnePlus launched a foldable device with these specs, it would have stood right next to the rumored Galaxy Z Fold 8 and might even have surpassed it with its higher refresh rate, better cameras, and larger battery (with support for faster wired and wireless charging).
The premium specs remain, just not under the “Open” range
On the positive side, the hardware-software combination intended for the OnePlus Open 2 will continue to be available as the Oppo Find N6 in select markets. Unfortunately, Oppo hasn’t released any Find N-series foldables in the US, and I expect the same will happen this year.
It looks like OnePlus may be pulling out of the foldable device race for now.
