The Subaru WRX STI Sport was unveiled at the Tokyo Auto Salon, but the prototype has enthusiasts wanting more.
While the WRX is badged as an STI Sport in its home country, the vehicle is believed to be essentially identical to the WRX tS Spec B already sold in Australia.
However, the company is reintroducing a manual transmission to the WRX after a seven-year absence from Japan.
In addition to the six-speed manual gearbox, the WRX STI Sport features a 2.4-litre turbocharged boxer engine that produces 202kW and 350Nm – 25Nm less than the S4 variant currently sold in this market and around 50Nm less than the previous generation S4.
Strictly speaking, Subaru Japan has named the new model WRX STI Sport♯ – the musical symbol for “spicy”.

In this case, however, it is assumed that this is a nod to the vehicle’s handling rather than an attempt to offer buyers even the slightest difference.
Like the Australian WRX tS Spec B, the STI Sport is equipped with adaptive dampers, Brembo brakes, a limited-slip differential, Ultrasuede Recaro seats and 19-inch wheels – although the STI Sport misses out on the Spec B’s large rear spoiler.
Despite the liberal use of Cherry Red – STI’s signature pink color – throughout the prototype, this vehicle is believed to be a sports package provided by STI rather than a true high-performance STI variant.
Countless online commenters have criticized the prototype, with many wanting a “real” STI after the high-performance model is discontinued in 2022.
