Gemini can now help you recognize AI-generated videos

Gemini recently acquired the ability to recognize AI-generated images, and Google is now expanding this capability to include AI video content. This allows you to ask Gemini whether a video was created or edited using AI, which should come in handy given the recent surge in AI on social media and messaging platforms.

Google says you can now upload video files directly in the Gemini app or on the web and start the assistant with a simple question like “Was this created with AI?” request. Gemini then analyzes the image and audio tracks for Google’s SynthID watermark. When the watermark is detected, Gemini shows exactly where in the video or audio it appears, providing more context than a simple yes-or-no answer.

As AI-generated videos become more common on social platforms, this feature is a welcome addition. Short clips, ads, and reposted videos are often shared without clear labels or context, making it harder to distinguish what’s real and what’s not. A built-in review tool in Gemini could help users quickly review questionable clips.

It’s useful but not a complete solution

While the feature is useful, it doesn’t solve the broader problem of AI detection across the web. Because it is entirely based on SynthID watermarking, it only recognizes videos generated by Google’s own AI models or those that have adopted SynthID watermarking.

If you upload a video created or modified by models who do not use SynthID, Gemini cannot mark it as AI created. Additionally, video uploads are limited to 100MB or 90 seconds, so this feature is aimed at social media posts and not full-length videos.

Google says the feature is available wherever the Gemini app is supported and in all languages. No subscription is required, making it an easy option for anyone looking to identify AI-generated content they come across online.
