Price increases seem to be almost constant these days, and we’ve become accustomed to regular price hikes from streaming services, but the opposite is rumored for Netflix and HBO Max subscribers. Yes, a price reduction for streaming subscriptions is being considered. Really.
Reuters reports that Netflix’s planned acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery’s studios and streaming unit could have a positive knock-on effect for subscribers of two major streaming services.
Citing “two people familiar with the proposal,” the deal could result in Netflix and HBO Max being bundled together at a lower overall cost than the individual services.
The sources also noted that “the vast majority of Netflix customers also subscribe to HBO Max,” which would make any price cut a serious win for viewers.
How much do Netflix and HBO Max currently cost?
Currently, Netflix costs $7.99 per month for the ad-supported plan or $17.99 per month for the standard ad-free plan. If you want access to Ultra HD resolution, the ability to stream on four devices simultaneously, and two additional member seats, the Premium plan costs $24.99 per month.
Meanwhile, HBO Max costs $10.99 per month with ads and $18.49 per month for the standard ad-free plan, while the premium plan costs $22.99 per month.
If you opted for the standard ad-free plans for both services, expect to pay a monthly bill of $36.48, while a premium subscription to HBO Max and Netflix brings the price up to $47.98.
There is no guarantee that this will happen, as Netflix’s offer competes with other bidders (mainly Paramount Skydance and Comcast). Therefore, it must be successful here before bundle discounts can actually be applied.
