Mulliner celebrates a new milestone in technology and craftsmanship.
Part of Bentley’s grand finale to its previous W12 flagship powertrain, the Bentley Batur is a limited edition body model from Bentley’s storied Mulliner bespoke division and not only features the most powerful version of Bentley’s twin-turbo W12, but also features some of the most luxurious details and finishes Mulliner has to offer. This includes 18-karat gold interior details, sustainably sourced leather and one of the most advanced lighting features in the entire automotive industry.
According to Bentley, the Batur’s bespoke animated welcome lamp is the “first lighting feature that can be personalized to customer requirements”. This gives owners of the extremely rare Batur the opportunity to create their own personal, bespoke welcome light animations, which can be up to 11 seconds long. The animations projected from each door welcome occupants into the car in a loop.
While the technology was originally introduced for the Batur, other Bentleys now also enjoy the high-tech, luxurious welcome lamp animations. A recent commission commissioned by Mulliner to celebrate Romania’s Athenaeum concert hall, a cultural and architectural icon of the city of Bucharest, featured a stunning and complex animation inspired by the embroidery pattern on the headrest and the details on the dashboard.
The system uses an incredible 415,800 tiny mirrors, all housed in a small silicon chip. It measures eight millimeters square and is called a digital micromirror device. Three colored light sources project in through five lenses and two prisms. Then the light passes through another five lenses and shows beautiful, detailed animations on the floor. The new bespoke animated welcome lamps, initially exclusive to the Batur, combine futuristic, high-tech solutions with the meticulous dedication to ultra-luxury and artisanal craftsmanship that Bentley Motors has been known for for over a century. They are an example of how Bentley is pushing a traditional luxury approach into the future of the automotive industry.
