Chery is about to break new ground with its flagship Tiggo 9 Super Hybrid.
The large seven-seat plug-in hybrid SUV (PHEV) is now available to order and will soon arrive in Australian showrooms as the Chinese brand’s most expensive model.
However, it still promises to maintain the company’s value-driven philosophy by offering top-notch features at the same price as entry-level competition.
Before it lands locally later this month, we were able to test the Tiggo 9 Super Hybrid last week during an exclusive flying visit to Chery’s global headquarters in Wuhu, China. So let’s take a look at this.
How much does the Chery Tiggo 9 cost?
The Chery Tiggo 9 Super Hybrid hits local showrooms in one model class: the fully equipped Ultimate, which costs $59,990 plus on-roads.
| Model | Price before on-road costs |
|---|---|
| 2026 Chery Tiggo 9 Super Hybrid Ultimate AWD CSH | $59,990 |
That puts it below the related Omoda 9 (from $61,990), but it also puts it in direct competition with entry-level versions of large seven-seat SUV rivals like the popular Kia Sorento S AWD (from $54,380), the Hyundai Santa Fe AWD (from $56,650) and the hybrid Toyota Kluger GX (from $62,410) – all of them Prices do not include on-road costs.

What does the Chery Tiggo 9 look like inside?
The Chery Tiggo 9 Super Hybrid ushers in a new era of interior design for the Chinese brand, with a modern, clean and stylish aesthetic in the cabin.
While the overall layout of the dashboard is a simple two-piece T-shaped configuration, there are more interesting textures, shapes and highlights throughout the interior, such as the raised stitching in the door panels, mood interior lighting strips and a mix of black and charcoal trim.
Chery has also moved away from pushing two equal-sized screens together for the instrument cluster and infotainment touchscreen, as is the case with smaller SUVs like the Tiggo 4 and Tiggo 7.
Instead, the Tiggo 9 features a 10.25-inch display in front of the driver, easier to read through the steering wheel, and a large 15.6-inch floating-table-style multimedia display on the center console.
The infotainment screen is huge and high-resolution, but it doesn’t feel like Chery just put a big-screen TV in a tiny living room.
Instead, it offers an intuitive menu structure to access the tons of features, with customizable widgets and ventilation control shortcuts at the bottom.
The center console area is defined by a chrome ring that surrounds the center vents, with matching accents around the cupholders and the array of physical controls alongside them, which include a dial for multi-mode drive settings, an electric handbrake, windshield defoggers and one-touch buttons to activate hybrid or full EV mode.
Both front seats have a business class feel with extendable legrests, offering a good balance between lateral support and overall comfort.
The massage function is particularly pleasant on a long holiday road trip, as is the seasonal heating and cooling.
And those in the middle row enjoy generous legroom, as well as rear air vents and USB sockets on the back of the center console.
However, the third row doesn’t offer as much space as some other seven-seat competitors and is best reserved for small children or occasional use.

It combines a 1.5 liter turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine and three electric motors that deliver impressive results such as: B. a combined maximum power of 315 kW and 580 Nm torque, a purely electric range of 170 km and the ability to travel up to 1,250 km without refueling or topping up the battery.
Power is transmitted to all four wheels via a 175 kW electric motor on the rear axle and two additional electric motors – one on the front axle with 75 kW and another with 90 kW, embedded in the world’s first three-speed hybrid automatic transmission.
The 34 kWh lithium-ion battery can be charged up to 71 kW with a DC fast charger.
How does the Chery Tiggo 9 drive?
Even if you agree with the saying “you only get what you pay for,” the Chery Tiggo 9 Super Hybrid will surprise you with more than you bargained for.
The asking price of $60,000 is a big jump for the brand on paper, but after a few hours behind the wheel on public roads in China and at Chery’s test track, it clearly retains the brand’s value-driven ethos.
Compared to its competitors, it’s actually a bargain. And yet it never feels cheap and cheerful.
Instead, it can be so much more – a supremely efficient long-distance cruiser, a guilt-free all-electric city commuter and a surprisingly quick beast given all its electric-petrol wizardry.
First and foremost, however, it is a solid suburban family car. It’s comfortable, quiet and allows for effortless acceleration when running on battery power alone. When slowing down, regenerative braking feels natural.
The three-speed transmission shifts smoothly and largely invisibly when changing gears, and the 1.5-liter gasoline engine only kicks in when the battery charge level falls below 25 percent or when you request maximum power.
However, it is a large car, both physically and in terms of mass (over 2.2 tonnes on the scales), which it cannot hide when cornering due to the slow, lifeless steering and tendency to roll over if the tires are put under too much strain.
However, our test car was a Chinese model, which has a softer and more comfort-oriented suspension setup than the Australian versions.
We will therefore reserve the final assessment of its dynamic character until we have the opportunity to test drive it on site in the next few weeks.
