Victorian car owners will soon be able to apply 20 percent discount on the registration fees of up to two cars as part of an incentive program intended to reduce the cost of living in the run-up to the state election on November 28th.
The southern state already has the second highest registration costs in Australia after New South Wales, with the location-dependent fee structure often topping $900 per car in metropolitan areas.
But Victoria motorists can apply for a 20 per cent discount from June 1, reducing the price of each registration by up to $186 for fiscal year 2025-2026.

The one-off registration bonus was announced by the Allan Labor government at the weekend and is available to owners of all light vehicles registered for personal use.
Individuals can apply for discounts on up to two vehicles registered in their name, which would increase the cashback amount to $372 if they paid the maximum annual registration fee of $930.70.
Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan said the program was a direct response to the rise in petrol and diesel prices due to the conflict in the Middle East.
“I am committed to using government to help struggling Victorians,” Prime Minister Allan said in a press release.
“As with cheaper public transport, this won’t fix everything, but they are immediate actions I can take to make a difference.
“We can afford it because right now it’s a one-time cost of living support while we generate a surplus.”
The Rego rebate is expected to apply to up to four million vehicles – including cars, SUVs and vans, but not fleet vehicles or heavy-duty vehicles weighing over 4.5 tonnes – and will cost the Victorian government around $750 million in lost revenue.
This is in addition to the $432 million lost by reducing public transit fees. Public transport in Victoria is free until May 31 and half price from June 1 until the end of this year.
Eligible motorists must apply for the 20 per cent Rego discount via the Service Victoria website. There they can fill out an online form and receive cash back into their bank account within 90 days.
Applications are possible from June 1st to July 31st.
