The BYD Shark 6 has made waves in the hotly contested double cab vehicle market, becoming Australia’s best-selling plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV) in 2025, despite initially being offered in a single model class.
That’s changing for 2026, as the existing Premium is now joined by a cheaper cab/chassis variant called Dynamic, while a new top-of-the-range performance variant brings a larger engine and the coveted 3500kg braked towing capacity – a benchmark for double cabs set by segment leaders such as the Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux.
Pricing for the Premium remains unchanged at $57,900 before on-road costs, despite increasing competition from rivals such as the more expensive GWM Cannon Alpha PHEV and the more expensive Ford Ranger PHEV, both of which were launched last year.

The JAC T9 Hunter PHEV will also be available later this year, and while pricing hasn’t been announced yet, it will need to be competitive with the Shark 6 – the current must-have PHEV ute – to avoid being overshadowed by BYD’s strong seller.

Drives and efficiency
The Shark 6 has two powertrains, but both are plug-in hybrid powertrains. The Dynamic Cab/Chassis and Premium use a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine and two electric motors.
The Performance has a larger 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine and a more powerful front-axle engine, but the same rear-axle engine.
All Shark 6 model levels feature all-wheel drive and double wishbone coil suspension front and rear.
Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality is standard, including a V2L adapter that lets you power small devices.
