This $8,000 Chinese electric car is based on the Mini Cooper and offers a respectable electric car range

Wuling has launched the updated 2026 Hongguang Mini EV in China, and it’s exactly the kind of car that has U.S. buyers yearning for Chinese electric vehicles. Priced between 44,800 and 54,800 yuan (approximately $6,500 to $8,000), this small four-door four-seater is back with a fresh look, a smarter interior and a range that’s finally worth talking about.

Does the design look good?

I won’t lie, the Hongguang Mini 2026 seems to be heavily inspired by the Mini Cooper, adopting the iconic name, the same small car design with round headlights and compact style.

However, it also features subtle design changes that make it stand out from the rest. While the Mini Cooper keeps things sleek and sporty, the Hongguang Mini features a boxier, more upright shape that Wuling calls a “cute square.” The result is a car that looks friendlier than its British counterpart.

The cloverleaf-style wheels and two-tone bodywork also give it its own personality, although the round headlights clearly pay homage to an icon. I would say the car looks really good and for the price it commands there is nothing like it on the market.

The redesign also brings three new paint options using an eight-coat process, and you can spec it with a two-tone body. At 3,268mm long, it’s still tiny, but just big enough to feel a little more substantial than before.

The interior also gets a proper refresh. There’s a dual-tone cabin, a 10.1-inch touchscreen with a cleaner interface and a column-mounted gear selector that frees up space in the center console.

What about the range?

As CarNewsChina reports, the 2026 Hongguang Mini EV offers two range options: 205 km (127 miles) and 301 km (187 miles), measured on the Chinese CLTC cycle. Note that the real range is usually lower.

car model Price (Yuan) Price (USD – approx.)
205 km advanced 44,800 $6,500
205km Premium 49,800 $7,300
301 km advanced 49,800 $7,300
301km Premium 54,800 $8,000

It also supports DC fast charging, which can charge the battery from 30% to 80% in 35 minutes, which is respectable for a car in this price range. That’s nothing compared to the new fast-charging standards of modern Chinese electric vehicles, but you get more than you pay for.

The 30kW motor is unchanged, so don’t expect it to be fast. But for under $8,000, the Hongguang Mini EV isn’t trying to be a performance car. It tries to be useful, and in most cases it succeeds.
