If Samsung launches a Galaxy S27 Pro, the name alone won’t save it

New rumors have once again sparked talk of a new Galaxy Pro flagship phone, and that immediately makes sense to me – but not for flattering reasons. Samsung may launch a fourth Galaxy S27 model next year, with a “Pro” variant expected to sit just below the top-of-the-line S27 Ultra.

This model essentially bridges the gap between the standard and ultra Galaxy phones with high-end features, without the S Pen. Those premium features could include the S26 Ultra’s new Privacy Display feature.

This all sounds smart on paper, but it also sounds like acceptance.

After spending time with the Galaxy S26, one thought keeps coming to mind. This compact phone has a solid software experience, reliable cameras, and is generally easy to recommend as a basic flagship. But “reliable” is no longer enough when these devices are offered at top prices.

The problem lies with the normal Galaxy S cell phones

Samsung’s own S26 comparison page shows that the base S26 is stuck at 25W charging power, while the S26+ goes to 45W and the Ultra has been upgraded to 60W. The camera story lands the same way. Samsung’s Galaxy S26 and Galaxy S26+ have the same 12MP ultra-wide, 50MP wide and 10MP telephoto setup, while the Ultra has the far more ambitious mix of 50MP ultrawide, 200MP main camera and 50MP + 10MP telephoto.

Aside from the Ultra, the other two models seem like an afterthought, but an expensive four-figure flagship at that. That’s why a Galaxy S27 Pro could make the S27 lineup feel less lethargic and more energetic. Just like the base model Pixel 10 and Pixel 10 Pro as well as the base model iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro, there could be a clear distinction in the intermediate model. For now, the Basic and Plus models are just enough. The Ultra does it all.

The Galaxy S27 Pro needs to be a course correction, not a rebrand

But a Pro model only works if Samsung creates a really convincing middle ground. One with faster charging, more powerful camera hardware and a better reason to exist below the Ultra.

I think Samsung definitely needs this change. But the name alone is not enough. If Samsung wants the Pro phone to matter, it needs to make this non-ultra Galaxy S phone feel more than just a standard safe phone and again feel like it’s worth the premium money. Otherwise, the S27 Pro will be just another label added to a lineup where all the excitement is only at the top.
