Garmin wearables can now help you with contraception too

Every day in tech seems to surpass the last. Just when you think you’ve seen everything, the conversation completely changes. I came across news about Garmin’s collaboration with Natural Cycles and had to pause for a moment. Contraception via smartwatch? This is not something you expect to read in the middle of an ordinary day.

But the longer I sat with it, the more it made sense. Technology is no longer just about faster chips or better cameras; It is slowly making its way into deeply personal areas, including women’s health. And honestly, this feels like a step in the right direction. For something that has often been overlooked or simplified for years, it feels both overdue and genuinely exciting to see innovation landing here.

Everything begins in sleep

At this point you’re probably wondering how this even works. A legitimate question, because it sounds a bit unreal at first. So your body temperature is not constant. It rises and falls subtly throughout your menstrual cycle. These tiny changes can actually signal important phases, such as ovulation, the window when pregnancy is most likely. This is where the Garmin Smartwatch comes into play. While you sleep, it monitors your skin temperature throughout the night. You don’t have to do anything. By morning, this data is synced to the Natural Cycles app, which analyzes these patterns over time and charts where you are in your cycle. This gives you a clearer, data-backed picture of what your body is doing.

Traditional hormonal contraception now also helps prevent pregnancy, but it works completely differently. It changes your hormones, which for many women can cause side effects such as mood swings, fatigue, or simply feeling different from yourself. This trade-off doesn’t work for everyone. What Garmin and Natural Cycles offer is a non-hormonal route. It doesn’t affect your body; it simply helps you understand it better. The app gives you insights, trends and daily guidance, but you still need to stay involved, check back regularly and follow the recommendations carefully. In a way, it shifts control back to you.

There’s a catch (for now)

As exciting as this all sounds, there is still a small catch. It is not yet generally available.

But once it is rolled out more widely, it has the potential to change the way birth control is viewed. Instead of relying on external factors to change your body, this approach is about understanding what your body is already telling you. It feels like you are aware of your body. For many women, contraception has long been about being prepared for side effects. This, in turn, leads to a more informed and personal way of doing things. If it delivers on its promise, it could completely change the conversation.
